A 400 page expense report, provided by Councillor Nelmes to the Herald, details a further $8973 in expenses billed to her office credit card last year. That included $256 to put singer Kamahl up at the Crowne chimi shoes Plaza when he was Australia Day ambassador and a $90 splurge on Imbibe 'living' probiotic water. Cr Nelmes believes the request was made by a member of the Young Liberals. She labelled their actions "desperate muck racking" as part of a "thinly veiled smear campaign" against her. The bill included an $111 spend at Blue Door and lobster at Hicksons in Sydney. The Mayoral credit card has been used to keep her official vehicle in immaculate condition since she was elected in November 2014, with over $900 spent on 11 car wash visits. One of those trips to the Snap car wash in Kotara cost $185 alone. Its website said that would buy a wash, shampoo and steam clean of the carpets, stain removal and leather conditioning. The card was used to foot the bill for $480 worth of food at cafes such as Juicy Beans, Baked Uprising and the Burwood Bench. An $111 lunch at Blue Door saw salted caramel, strawberry shortcake and chocolate mint slice for desert, while lobster was on the menu during a trip to Hicksons in Sydney for tapas. Another $400 worth of cafe visits were funded by a credit card belonging to the Lord Mayor's office, one of those for a meeting with council's media relations manager. The same card paid for more than $900 worth of supermarket snacks and "handcrafted water kefir drinks" for the councillors, a $92 fruit hamper for former chief executive Frank Cordingley when he was unwell and 26 bottles of wine. But, Cr Nelmes said much of the spending had been by her staff. She said $270 worth of baggage expenses during a US trip were because it had not jimmy choo choo been included when the tickets were booked. "I'm an active Lord Mayor, I'm often out and about making sure Newcastle is on the map. I believe that is what the city wants," she said.
Liberal Cr Brad Luke said it was up to ratepayers to make their own judgement. "But if I was to go down the road and buy smashed avocado I would have to pay for it out of my own pocket, you could not claim it as a business expense.".
